Ian and Wendy Coker took over at Tinhay Garage in December 2007, although the garage has been on the site since the mid 1980s.
They are both local, Ian growing up at Yelverton, and Wendy is Tavistock ‘born and bred’.
Ian has been in the motor trade for over 30 years, helping his brother Frank in his motor repair business at Meavy and then completing his City & Guilds apprenticeship on commercial vehicles. He went on to work on coaches, commercial trucks and gas tankers, later returning to work on cars with the Mercedes main dealer, then latterly a local car repair garage.
Wendy’s background is in accounts, so discovering that Tinhay Garage was for sale, they decided that the time was right to venture out on their own.
Since taking over in December 2007, much of the equipment has been modernised. The building has had a facelift since they took over and has also been redecorated internally, making visiting Tinhay Garage a much more pleasant experience. There is now an improved reception area, office, a dedicated area for fabrication and storage as well as a new insulated roof.
